It is illegal for me to ride a trike on a bike licence. Without besmearching any of the car drivers amongst you do know anyone without a bike licence that have any idea how to handle these controls straight off??? Safe enough to just hop and set off down the road???

Yep our government in it's infinate wisdom believe's that although you need retraining to use a manual cars controls if you qualified on an Automatic if you are qualified to use these controls

Image

then the government feels you are qualified to use these controls. Anyone up for playing spot the difference?

I mean afterall the controls are so similar, and bike controls are sooo different to these.

Apparently the rules changes were made in a governement intiiative called Safer Motorcycling - the only way it will be safer because there will be less of us on the road...

I am soooo annoyed - fuming in fact. Apparently the DVLA didn't think there would be a problem as only a minority (10% of us) that have Bike licences don't have car licences. The thing is it's like no one knows - I even asked a friend working for a vehicle squad in the Met and he didn't know!

Holy_mother_of_all_gods. If you as a Biker get wiped out and put in a wheelchair but want to ride again then you have two choices trikewise. Get a car licence or ask for provisional entitlement on your licence and have L plates on your trike. As well as all the regs that apply to cars the trike is limited to either having one seat, or the rider has to take a person with B1 catagory on their licence everytime it is taken out.
(This means that even with two years of Bike experience I still need my girlf with no Bike or Trike experience on the back because her CAR licence has catagory B1 on it)

Image

What_the_f**k. On what planet does this look like a car? I can tell you it may not handle exacly like a Bike but its infinately closer than the handling of a car. Unbelievable.

Oh. Yeah. It seems that if I wantr a Bike with a Sidecar instead of a Trike - well that would be legal. Err guys - it STILL has three wheels - check it out...

Image

Un-f***ing-believeble. I don't know if I am annoyed because I was riding for six months illegally and could have lost my licence, that I am going to have to take a car test in order to ride the trike, that I spent £200 on insurance today, that I am going to spend another £200 Monday getting the woring sorted or just that I was so looking forward to thrashing some of the immense stress of the last month or so out of my system once the new wiring loom is fitted Monday.

You can get a m/c license w/o a car license?

Our m/c "license" is an endorsement on the regular license.

In BC you can get a class 6 (motorcycle license) without a class five (regular car license) at least you could when I got my license...

That do suck, alright.

That's what you get when you allow politicians to run things.

Ain't it funny how most politicains started out as lawyers? O.K., not really funny (sad, more like it), but 'Kill All The Lawyers' starts to sound better all the time, eh?

Don't get me started on Lawyers...

I'm piling back into Court about my son. For the pleasure of preparing/writing the letter I've been charged £150 - and I have an ehtical lawyer!

Yeah, lately I've been reading about how the UK and the EU are changing the licensing rules regarding motorcycles... mainly from BIKE and TWO.

They make it harder to obtain a MC license yet refuse to have car drivers jump through the same hoops even though it's mostly due to inattentive drivers.

Then they want speed limiters which can actually make a bike run wide exiting a turn should you need to gas it up just to prevent straightways speeding.

Don't think people in the US will react differently to new rules because most of the First and Second world consider bikes to be frivilous things and that many who ride are menaces who should be off the roads.

ahh... feels good to release that bottled up anger. thanks Kal.

The trike thing sounds relatively new, when was that implemented?

The DVLA study was Safer Motorcycling around about 2000 which is why its shocking that hardly anyone seems to know about it.

In VA you can get a Motorcycle only license. Allows you to legally ride a motorcycle only.
