Hi. I’ve just bought my first motorcycle CBR 600 f2 :D . Also I’ve bought a HJC CL-14 Fuse helmet size M on-line. This is my first helmet. It fits well but it looks too bulky and it’s kind of heavy :? . It looks like it’s much bigger then other helmets I’ve seen on other riders. Are HJC helmets bigger then other famous brands helmets or it’s just my imagination. Are all Medium helmets approximately the same size? Can you guys advise me a good helmet under 250$ which is not so bulky and not a piece of crap?

Thank you

There may be slight differences in size, but nothing very significant. You really need to go to a bike dealer who offers a lot of helmets to try on and compare--online buying without doing the proper homework can be a gamble. Trying some others on may also help put your own helmet in perspective, and it won't look as big as you think it does.

My Experience

Well, I'm just coming back to riding after several years and I just went out and bought my helmet. I have always had a problem with hats because I wear a size 8, and so helmets are also particularly difficult for me. I'm into a XXL or XXXL.

Anyways, I wandered to several stores looking for helmets and being generally ignored. HJC ussually had something in my size, but they weren't very comfortable. They don't fit right around my head.

I finally visited Coleman Powersports over near DC and actually ran across a salesman who was interested in fitting a helmet for me (and selling one also). Quite an interesting experience. There's not much difference size-wise, but the shape of the helmet varies markedly. HJCs tend to be round. Scorpions tend to be more narrow and oval. Arais fit quite tight through the cheeks. Etc.

How refreshing to have a real salesman walk me through the process. He took some measurements and pulled out quite a few lids. I really wanted to see the Scorpion, which was nice but a little tight. He pointed right away to a Shoei that, incidentally was 35% off. Fit like a dream. Tried everything else for good measure, but came home with the Shoei. He mentioned that HJCs are good helmets, but some people (like me) they just don't work on because of the roundness. He also pulled out the most expensive Arai he had and it was too tight through the cheeks.

My wife, however, fit perfectly into a medium HJC helmet and we walked away with 2 great helmets that fit.

I would also suggest visiting a store that knows how to fit helmets. It's definitely worth the time.

Ye I guess it’d be the best thing to try a helmet at a store but there is a little problem. I live on the island and we don’t have any motorcycle stores. You have to spend a day and 100$ to get off the island. So it’s better for me to buy stuff on line.

Arai actually has 3 different shapes and they all fit differently. It would be worth your while to get fitted properly. After all a helmet that does not fit right may not stay in place if you crash. You also need to put it on and fasten the strap. Then see if you can roll it off back to front. If you can get another helmet. Many also have different cheek pads to adjust the fit.

It may be a hassle to get off the island but be worth it in the long run.
