cruiser vs. sport bike.....

#1 Unread post by *Tara* »

hello!
im currently looking into getting my first bike; and i plan to get it closer to spring..... my dilemma is sport vs. cruiser.....im looking at both the 2007 Boulevard C90 Black and the 2006 Kawasaki Ninja650 but cant decide which would be a better first bike.... i have heard great things about the kawasaki being a great begginner bike, but ive also heard cruisers are the way to go... i concidered getting the ninja 250 but have decided against it...everyone ive talked to about the 250s say they traded it in right away for something a bit bigger....
opinions anyone? 8)

Sit on both and see what fits you best. That C90 though is a pretty large bike as your first. I'd wager it is near 700lb.

hell for me my 600 is too small (well actually its a 650) but I have had it only a month. However its not because I want speed but because I have been able to quickly learn to handle this bike (I am a quicker learner than most) but because I think its too small does not mean someone else will think its to small. You may think its too big because you havent figured out how to handle it yet. So a 250 ninja may be just fine for you as it may be the right size bike for you but it may not. Sit on them and feel which you like the best. try and get a test drive. I know some dealers allow test drives and I have about 6 dealers around me that allow test drives but only 1 that does not.

as for sport vs cruiser I was told by some guys who have been riding for many years, and it is no one on this site, that if you can learn on a cruiser you can ride anything. A cruiser can be a good way to learn how to ride because it is more forgiving to mistakes than a sport bike. I am just giving information and not telling you which way to go. That is ultimately your decision. I will let others tell you which way to go :D.

Agreed. If you're a newb, you might want to check out the C50 black. Over a hundred pounds lighter, several thousand dollars cheaper, and looks much the same as the C90.

my main dilemma is the sport vs. cruiser.... they're so different with so many pros and cons to each side....im just hoping someone will bring up a point i havnt thought of yet :)

There are lots of reasons. The weight by itself is a huge one. An inexperienced biker like you or I are way more likely to drop a bike, and a bike that massive is impossible to stop from dropping once it starts going to one side.

Get a Buell Blast! It's a comfy, unique standard w/ just the right amount of power for a beginner but peppy enough for someone experienced who likes a fun bike...

I had the same decision (thread in the Ladies Lounge). I ended up going with a sport standard/naked bike. I'm not near decided on whether to start going towards cruisers or sportbikes, and I like nakeds....heck, I might just eventually stockpile one of each.

For your first bike, first figure out how you will be using the bike. This will really help you decide on which style will fit you better. Will it be a commuter? In town? Used for longer roads trips and leisurely cruises? Fun jaunts?

Once you honestly and realistically answer that question "What do I need the bike to do?", then you can better say "Ok, a _____ will fit my purposes better". From there you can narrow the scope.

Of course a bike is not all work, no play. But you don't want to have a bike that doesn't work well. Like trying to do long rides on something that is uncomfortable to stay in the saddle. Or, you don't want to be wrestling a large heavy bike in tight spaces. Just a couple examples to think about.

as a first bike I would go with the Ninja 650, its easisier to ride and handle than a big cruiser bike like the C90, instead of the Ninja 650 I would suggest to look at the Yamaha FZ6, or FZ1, or the Honda 599 or 919, those are the "do anything" bikes, they ride and handle like a sports bike plus they have the speed and power to keep up to and pass any other bike on the road.
