First track day

And holy cow it was fun! I rode in the street (novice) group and had a blast! I didn't gun it in the straights, instead I worked on smooth and quick cornering. Didn't drag a knee (although I think I could have a few times) but just worked on trying to make it flow.

A few yahoos out there but overall it was pretty calm. A friend of mine in the Racing Practice (Advanced) group went down at over 100+ on his new '06 R6 and while his bike is...a bit worse for the wear (gotta love gravel traps) it doesn't even look like he's bruised.

I highly suggest a track day for anyone looking at getting into racing or just wanting to improve on your riding skills. No traffic, no road hazards, and your "lane" is 45 feet wide! The coaches/control riders were extremely helpful as well. Of course, now I am absolutely beat to death and just want to sleep...

No insurance either.

Bummer about your mate but it sounds like you had a blast. Good show!

Doh! Too bad about your buddy, but sounds like you had a good time otherwise.

How do sign up for that kind of thing? And how much does it cost? Do you need a certain type of bike, or will any bike do?

I'm just curious because that sounds like a really fun way to ride without having to worry about cagers crushing at 60mph.

camthepyro,

They're not cheap, but there are some great places to do them around here. Take a look @ the Suzuki Superbike School @ Road Atlanta. There are also plenty of trackdays @ Talladega GP, and Barber Motorsports Park.

I did mine at Barber with my riding club. They have track days all the time, usually costing between $200 and $300. Since I went with my club it was $180 ($150 for lifetime members).

Generally it's for sportbikes/sport tourers. There was actually a guy on a cruiser at Little Tally last time (or so I heard).

Heh, at the track day there were 2 guys on new '06 R6 race bikes who were absolute rockets on the track. I was curious as to who they were so I checked last night...realized their team is currently in 2nd place in the WERA National Endurance Championship...looks like we had the full spectrum riding this past weekend!
