leave your helmet?

does anyone leave their helmet on the bike, or have helmet locks and use them? everyone thinks im crazy because i dont leave my helmet hanging on my handle bars when in go in side places. they keep telling me 'who would steal a helmet?'. well to me a 200-500$ piece of gear left unprotected is a prime target, and ill admit when i see them i think about walking off with one just to have an extra helmet for free. and even for someone that wouldnt use the helmet, some kid might see it and just grab it because he can do some stupid stuff with later. or someone might see your bike and decide to sit on it or something else and knock the helmet on the ground, a simple drop like that will comprimise your helmet.

also the helmet locks ive seen, just lock onto the strap makes no sense. if someone wants the helmet it would be no big deal to cut the strap.

just wondering what everyone does with helmets, or have had any stollen or messed with.

I have a helmet lock on my bike and that's where my helmet stays, when I'm going to be away from my bike (except at home, it has a special spot on the floot in my room).

If someone cuts the strap to get my helmet, well, that $150 piece of gear is now a fancy looking paperweight. So it's not worth stealing, really.

Where my helmet sits depends on where I am, what I'm doing, and what the weather is like.

At home, it sits on a shelf in the garage next to the bike
At work, it either sits on a filing cabinet next to where I work, or on the helmet lock on my bike
Out shopping, I'll generally leave it locked to the bike if the weather is nice, or I'll take it with me if it's not

I almost always take mine inside. I have only used the helmet lock on my bike once, and that was when I went hiking at the park. Didn't really feel like carrying it around that long through the woods. It never really bothers me to carry it around.

You should never leave your helmet on your handlebars. You risk damaging the padding inside the helmet. You should never leave it on the seat either, because 90% of the time, it somehow falls off.

I usually take it with me on short stops. If I am going to be away from the bike for a while I use a light cable through the chin piece and fasten it to the luggage rack. You can do the same with your jacket with the cable through the sleeve.

I have to carry my helmet with me - it helps explain the boots.

And worse yet, they might put it back on the handlebars 'cause they dont want to "pee" off the big bad biker, so you you might not even know your helmet was comprimised. I'll never leave mine dangling on the handlebars or on the seat.

I'll usually take mine with me - they make great handbaskets when you're shopping and more importantly, chicks dig it

Good call not leaving it out. I either lock mine to the little D-ring lock or take it with me if I'm going to be a while.

ya i always shop with mine and fill it up with stuff. security doesnt like me doing that and follow me around. its nice to put a big ice cold gatorade in it while shopping then go out in the heat and put the helmet on when its still icey cold ;p
