Someone stole my plate
My license plate was stolen off my bike. This ever happen to anyone else ?
Would've been alot better if they stole the whole dam bike.
Now I have to deal with the DMV and the police to get a replacement.

It is a possibility. My coworker's plate fell off on his 636. We think it struck his rear tire when it did because there is a nice little gash on it too...Meanie wrote:You sure it didn't fall off? Many times we tend to overlook the simple things. The screws/bolts could have vibrated off resulting in loss of the plate.
Just a suggestion.

people steel plates because they cant afford the plates and/or they just stole someone else's bike and want to ride around thinking they are "invincible" to being pulled over by the cops. good luck.

Re: Someone stole my plate
I hope you reported it to the cops right away. You're plate was probably stolen to use on a stolen bike. The stolen bike (and it's plate) will obviously reported to the cops right away. The theives will steal the plate off another bike, in hopes that the plate will stay unreported over the weekend.MrGompers wrote: Now I have to deal with the DMV and the police to get a replacement.
The best bet to combat these jerks is to make sure the cops know the plate is stolen, ASAP. When someone stole the plate off of my car (on a Friday night, of course), I reported it right away and the cops caught the theives the following morning.

The odds of the plate falling off are about 1 in a 100. I check the bolts all the time and they've never been loose. I do suppose someone could have loosened them as a joke.
What flynrider wrote makes more sense. From what I read on the Conn DMV site plate theft is a big problem here. According to them people are stealing plates so they can get the expiration stickers off of them.
Starting in 2007 Conn is going to require that expiration stickers be affixed inside the windshied. (Altho i don't see how this will help motorcycles)
I just thought it was odd to have a bike plate stolen considering that riding season here is almost over. I will be going to the police station to report it tonite. All I need is to have the police swat team raid my house because some fool committed a crime while using my plate.

that sucks. Plates get stolen off bikes in the city (Philly) all the time. like someone else said, its normally so they can be put on stolen bikes.
just be happy they stole only the plate, and not the bike.

I lost a plate once at the start of a 2,000 mile roadtrip. I thought it had been stolen, but when I looked closely, there were still some bits of metal under the mounting bolts and no sign that the plate had been bent repeatedly to break it off. Turns out it was simple metal fatigue. The old 750 twin had some really annoying vibrations at highway speed.
When that bike hit around 20K miles, metal pieces started breaking and falling off on a regular basis

Where do you get these odds? Because this year, I've seen two plates come off on group rides. Both times at high speeds towards my head. I guess that means I've ridden with about 200 bikes?MrGompers wrote:The odds of the plate falling off are about 1 in a 100. I check the bolts all the time and they've never been loose. Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
