Yet another newbie

About a month ago a good friend convinced me (after months of trying) to go for a ride with him on his Valkyrie.

I was terrified (never having ridden on a motorcycle before). However, after a short ride (around the block twice) - when I got off the bike I was asking when I could go for another ride (even though I was shaking).

Since then, I have gotten very comfy riding on the back of his bike and don't mind it (much - sometimes I get nervous).

His wife (my best friend) has let my husband & I get our feet wet riding on her older Savage 650 - and we are now totally hooked on riding.

We have gotten helmets, boots, gloves. This past Friday we both passed our permit tests. AND, bought our first bike (to be ridden once we are comfortable on her smaller bike). The bike was too good to pass up for the price and is very similar to the model bike my husband has been looking at. We ended up with a 2003 Suzuki Volusia VL800.

We plan on taking the safety course in the spring (classes are booked right now). In the meantime, we hope to get more lessons in at the empty parking lot.

We also still need to find riding jackets (large sizes).

Wow, crazy, yet still cool paint job! Anyway, congrats on the first bike! I actually just got the 01 version of yours as my first bike a couple of months ago, and I love it! Also, congrats on the permit tests and all. Glad to hear you are planning on taking the safety course, it helps a LOT. You might want to look for jackets at places like http://www.newenough.com and at local riding shops. I got a nice (though definitely winter) jacket at our local bike shop for 150, it's armored, textile, and with enough pockets to shove in anything you might possibly conceivably need... Anyway, best of luck, ride safe, and have fun!

Thanks very much! Will check the link out.

Yeah, the paint job - I like it...but was a bit worried it would be viewed as cliche or gaudy. I still think it's pretty cool!

How long have you been riding? I'm just wondering how soon we will actually be able to start lessons on this new bike.

It's my very first bike, I'm a 20 yo guy, 6'2" and 280, and it fits me just fine! As soon as I could, I took it out for a spin around the block, (before the MSF). Just be careful around sand/dirt and in the corners and it'll straighten itself out... Best of luck!

Thanks Wrider!

I'm about 5'8" and hubby is 6" even - hopefully it works out for both of us.

Will probably be a while before we get it on the road - but I AM looking forward to at least giving it a try.
