Rookie Gear Recommendations?

I bought my motorcycle. (1983 Honda Nighthawk 550)
I bought my helmet. (Shoei)
I need a good pair of gloves and a couple other things. What are your recommendations for a new rider in a cold area? Remember that I don't have a ton of money to spend.

Check their closeouts. If it's cold a lot, an enduro style jacket would suit you well. Adjustability, warmth, protection. I myself have a tourmaster jacket i got from them for $120, retail is around $200 depending where you look.

I'd say that next up would be Motorcycle jacket and gloves...
a fabric paddock jacket wouold probably be best
and motorcycle gloves. I have a pair of winter gloves I've just started wearing again. They are leather, waterproof and pair up my fingers for warmth and for better support during a down.
It may be that dealers in your area will be having a sale if the weather is cold enough to slow business down.

Yup new enough has some fantastic deals. I'd stick with a textile jacket with an insulated liner. A jacket like that is more versatile in changine weather. If it is really cold, then you could just add some more layers underneath your jacket.
For gloves, something insulated and waterproof is nice. I prefer leather gloves as they'll offer a bit more protection.
Make sure you get some good boots and cold weather pants. Riding with a set of cold twig and berries is not fun

HAHAHA... He's got a good point. Especially considering that's where your legs connect to and you use your legs a lot to control the bike and anchor yourself to it.

that's a sweet jacket.
what are your riding plans?
i'd like to suggest a 2 piece suit if you plan on doing canyon rides and trackdays. that way... you can just wear the jacket part for normal rides.

I'm just gonna cruise around my neighborhood for a while until I get better, then around the city of Boulder, CO. Maybe go on the occasional long ride when the weather gets better in 6 months.

that's cool.
but yeah... i suggest a 2 piece suit. alpinestars is a proven brand. wear the jacket for cruising, then wear both for a more spirited type of riding.
don't forget to get good gloves and boots too.
