Help! Need Battery Advice

Good morning all! I'd love any advice y'all may have regarding batteries. I have a 1987 Yamaha Virago XV 535TC. The spec page says I need a 12 V/12 A/h. Went to Wal-mart last night to buy one and they sell something called ES 12 but it had some other alphabets (N E or something like that). Where can I buy a relatively cheap but good battery? The bike didn't have one in it when I bought it. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

12V 12 A/h means it needs a 12 volt battery with a 12 amp per hour rating. Model names can be misleading. I would recommend checking with Batteries Plus if there is a store near you.
I recently wrote an article about batteries if you want to check the site in my signature. Might be of some help.
Good luck,
Greg

You need to find out the part number of the bike's battery It should be somewhere on the old one if you don't have a manual. It might look something like YB12A-A1. Then you'll either have to find the battery with the same number at Wal-Mart, or you'll have the check the battery application chart that they (hopefully) have hanging somewhere in the battery section.
12 volts and 12 amp/hrs. gives you the electrical specs, but there are more differences. Some have the terminals on top, some on the sides. Some have the positive terminal on the left, others on the right. There are also varying sizes, so you need the one that will fit in your battery box. The model number will determine what all of those variables are and lead you to a battery that will actually fit correctly.

Batteries+ has decent battery prices. About $30 for my old Kawa.
