no torque, instead bogging down when gassing

The bike is a Yamaha DT 200, 2 stroke:

I've finally gotten the bike running after having compression problems and needing new rings, although now whenever I try to put any torque behind it, the engine boggs down. Once I reach around 3000 rpm or even just second gear it seems to be fine.

I'm going to take a look after work today, but a symptom that may help with trouble shooting... my speedo is whining and bouncing all around after a verydirty off roading day yesterday heheh.

I have a feeling that my speedo is run off of a vacuum hose which is hooked up to the carb and it may be a vaccum leak.

I'm a car guy and this is my first bike so thats where I get the theory behind the carb etc.

no torque bogs down

just a guess or two!---is it getting gas when you push it? - dirty carb, dirty fuel line, plugged intake in tank or cdi/advance problem?

look for a manual for parts pictures and and just think through what everythink is designed to do.

good luck

Find a mechanic and have them check the jetting, and re-jet if nessesary. A quick ride will tell him whats what. I suspect this is your problem. It probably just needs an adjustment of the idle/air screw, but an experianced 2-stroke guy will know right away.

The bike is properly warmed up, right? And this happens every time you ride in first, or just the first run thru the gears? If it only happens once per ride, it's normal warm-up and cleaning itself out for a 2-stroke.

Your speedo is definately not driven off carb vaccum. The 2 problems are not related. Try taking the speedo cable off (from the back of the speedo and the front hub) clean and lube the inner cable. If it still acts up, you may have to take the speedo drive off the hub and chech it, clean and grease it as well.

Go to this website. It has parts lists and great diagrams for every bike you can think of. That should help A LOT.

could be crank seals, they will also cause a hard startor no start if they are bad enough

First start your bike and spray carb cleaner on the intakes. If the motor reves up replace them. Your speedo noise is inside the actual guage. Take it apart and put a very light coat of grease on the plastic round thing. I had the same problem with my 71 CB. Warning the noise will get louder and you will hate it.
