United Motors?
United Motors?
Hey guys! Another newbie to the bike scene here. And I promise this post isn't asking about what 600cc bike I should get haha.
I'm 19 and am currently looking for my first bike. I did have a Yamaha R6 in mind, but after reading some of the stickies I've definetly decided to try out a 250 first. Although my TEAM motorcycle school dosen't start until the begining of January, I figured I'd start looking now. I haven't decided 100% on getting a 250, I'm definetly leaning towards it. I have a pretty sharp learning curve so I'll see how comftorable I am on the 250's at the school.
In the November issue of Cycle World I noticed an add for a motorcycle company called United Motors. I personally haven't heard anything about this company. Probably because people seem to talk most about R1's, R6's,GSXR's, Ninja's, etc.
So my question is has anybody heard much about these bikes? They seem to sell for pretty cheap. Hers's their site-
http://www.umamerica.com/site/usa/
They have an attractive 250 sport bike for under $ 4,000 brand new. This seems rather low, although it is a 250. I have no problem buying a used bike, infact that's what the plan was originaly. But $ 4,00 for a brand new bike with a 3 year warrenty definetly grabbed my attention.
Thanks for the help.

There's a dealer finder on their website. Might want to look up a number of a dealer and ask them about the UM bikes. They could probably tell you what they are like, if they service them, reliability, resale value, etc.
The nearest one to me is 50 miles away...that would kill it for me, especially if its hard to get parts or service from a non-authorized dealer. A 3 year warranty doesn't do you any good if the nearest shop is 100 miles south.

Yea i know, 390 does sound wayyy heavy for a 250. I'll definetly look into it. I'm quite pleased with the way it looks. Don't get me wrong, I promise I'm NOT picking the bike I want by the way it looks, although it will be a decideing factor.
I live in Portland, Oregon and I'm only aware of 3 bike dealers in this area. And UM dosen't sound like it's the most well known company out there, so finding a dealer may be a challenge, I'll find one on my lunch break. Thanks for the input guys.

yep, definitely the same bike.
is this just a different name so they can market the bike better?

hyosung is a company from korea... they've been around for a while but they're new to exporting.TheOtis wrote:what?!!! crazy!! Does that mean UM may own that company? I wonder what the purpose of that is? Are Hyosung's decent bikes? Decent meaning not a POS.
a lot of people are turned-off the by it bec it's a korean co. so that's probably why they're doing this. this way... they won't be using the name hyosung.
they must have made a deal w/ UM to sell their bikes under their name.

I see, I got it. Yea, It does make me second guess looking into.
I found a dealer in downtown portland, I'll probably head there after work to talk to someone about UM's. I'm hoping to only need to have this bike for aslong as it takes for me to get good and comftorable rideing. And finally move up to an R6. But I won't push it, if you're not comftorable, you're not comftorable.
I really like the idea that they offer really good financing, $50 bucks a month and a 3 year warranty sounds very very appealing, especially for a first bike. And I'd be able to put down 60% of the $3,500 price tag.
It's all sounding great so far, I just hope I don't get down there and find out it's the equivilent of a pinto haha.

If you put 60% down plus 6.5% tax (230) plus other fees (100) you'll be financing at $55 for 3 years (at avg 8% interest) and pay $221 in interest or $35 for 5 years and pay $374 in interest, bringing your total cost to around $4,401 and $4,204 respectively, on their cheapest bike less maintenance/service fees.
Usually their 'financing deals' are for those will excellent credit, which to them usually means a score of 850. I have never known anyone, even with perfect credit, to qualify for their ideal terms.

Holly cow. Thanks for figuring that out for me!
Well, thank god I'll have my parents to co-sign. They have next to perfect credit. But not me, I've only financed one thing and that won't be paid off until next month, but I haven't been late on one payment. So I can't see myself having more 675 at best, I hate having to build credit.
But really, thanks for telling me that. I think I might just look for a used one, even though I'll finance one anyway, and I think financing on used bikes, even from a bank, the interest tends to be higher. Aslong as I'm not paying more then 80 or so a month for more then 36 months I'll be happy.
Which brings me to another though, I don't know much about selling something you're still makeing payments on. But I have a feeling in someway I'd be looseing money.
