I need some help with the installation of a new Electrosport (well, actually Acewell brand) 3900 digital speedo in my 1990 Hawk GT. I've never put in a magnetic reed system, and was wondering if anyone here has and if so can tell me where best to mount the magnet and pickup.

The manual says the magnet has to be within 8mm of the pickup, and I'll be damned if I can find a good place on either wheel to stick the thing so it's that close.

The best place I have found is to mount the magnet on the rear disc and the pickup either on the swingarm or the bracket for the brake caliper.






Then just run the wires along the inside of the swingarm and then up. Once done it is barely noticeable.

Thank you for the quick response, but it seems my setup is a little different. If I can get a digital camera, I'll post pictures, but basically one of the areas like the one I've circled in your picture is closer to the center of the disc ("up" in your picture) than what you've got, and it doesn't look to me like it would be possible to place the magnet on the disc there without it running into said part of the brake mechanism.

Maybe it seemed the same to you but worked out, or is there some way that you know of to adjust the positioning of the brake caliper assembly to allow more room?

I really appreciate any other advice you can give. I'll see if I can't get some pictures of my own soon.

If there's no room for it on the brake side, can you fit the magnet on the rear sprocket?

Yeah, might be I can do it on the sprocket; it's gonna take me a little while at any rate.

Mintbread: do you remember how you figured out the correct wiring for hooking up the speedo, with regards to neutral indicator, etc etc? It seems to me there's too many wires on the Acewell to match up with the stock wires, and I don't have a good reference (other than the manual's wiring diagram) to figure out exactly which wires should be connected, and which shouldn't.

Another option is to mount it on the front end. Place the magnet in a similar place on one of the front discs and put the pickup on the inside of the fork or guard if it fits. The only drawback there is the wire running up the inside of the fork to the speedo is rather visible.

If you have your bikes wiring diagram and that of the speedo then it is fairly simple. If not, chase the wires to their end point to figure out their purpose and match them up to those on the speedo. It is a little time consuming but with a bit of patience it is possible.
The neutral light was a bit of a pain so in the end I spliced the wire at the side stand switch and just ran it from there.

Thanks. I was a little worried when I was tring to figure out where to mount it as I wanted it to be as inconspicuous as possible as wires and sensors are not a good look.

Mintbread, thanks again for the help, and sorry to bring this up once again but regarding the wiring: For example, the speedo calls for a connection for Clock Power and Switch Key, neither of which were on stock. Did you just leave those off, or did you find some other way to run leads to power?

I'm sure with enough fiddling I'll find a place for the speed sensor. *fingers crossed*

Does your headlight come on when you turn the ignition on?

Yeah, the light comes on. All I'm saying is the new Acewell speedo seems to call for connections that weren't on the stock speedo (like Clock, etc) and I'm wondering if you found a way to adapt for those, or if you just connected what was available from the stock speedo and left off some of the more extraneous features of the digital one.
