Gas Mileage VS cars?

Hey, thanks for the response on the last thread, I have a new Q.

How much more gas would a 4cyl car burn, than a 450cc motorcycle? I have to travel about 20km back and forth every day to college (the busses suck for such a distance!).

Im trying to decide if it is worth getting a motorcycle because of the savings, however winter is approaching, and Im not sure about how safe I will be riding.

My 535cc Virago gets about 43-45 mpg whether in town or on the highway.

My girlfriend's 1500cc Civic gets about 36 mpg in town and 40 mpg on the highway.

A motorcycle certainly isn't the most practical option. No groceries, no passengers, no gear, no new DVD players from Best Buy, no riding in snow/on ice.

I'd love to go ripping by cops in the winter in a wheelie. I don't think it'd register in their mind that a bike was out in a snow storm, much less on one wheel.

But yeah, riding in the winter on snow SUCKS, even on a dirt bike. I've made a few gouges in ice with my XR200R this past winter, not fun. And ice hurts more for some reason.

If you have a limited riding season I dont think it would be worth it. Some bikes get pretty poor mileage. Others are good, in the lower cc class like the Nighthawk, Rebel, Blast. They get around 60-70.

Have to look at real mileage on the cars. The EPA estimates are way off. Even those hybrids usually get 40 or less, worse on highways.

You could easily save yourself a ton of cash just by changing your driving habits.

The EPA estimates for my car (98 Grand Am) and my gf's car (94 Civic DX) are absolutely spot-on for both city and highway. I have two buddies with hybrids, and they have the same experiences. Lifetime gas mileage for my friend's '04 Prius is 52.4 mpg.

Anyway, that sucks about their Prius. I get that with a gasoline Civic. The Prius should be doing way better than that. Maybe there's something wrong with it.

Spiked Tires + Tarmac = Pain

And if any part of your body comes into contact with those spiked tires in the event of an accident you will be in for a world of hurt that you cannot even begin to imagine.
