I got an old 1981 Yamaha xj650 and it runs good, but as soon as I want to park the bike it shuts off. It won't shut off at a traffic light or a stop sign just when ever I park. This makes no sense to me at all.
I hope someone out there can shed some light on this.

It sounds like an electrical problem (which is never very fun!). Can you explain exactly when the bike stalls? Is it when you put the bike in neutral, put the kick stand down, etc??? That will help people to understand so that we can all answer a little better for you.

When you go to park the bike, are you putting the kickstand down? While still in gear possibly? Even if not in gear, a defective kickstand switch might kill the bike if put down in neutral as well.

This of course assumes your bike has such a switch. It may be that turning the bars to full lock, like you tend to do when parking, is causeing a short or something.

And then I have to ask, is parking a running bike something you do alot of? I tend to shut mine off when I park 'em.

As soon as I pull up to a parking spot and start to back up is when it happens. I can be in gear or neutral it will do the same thing, but if I keep it reved up a bit it's fine. I just don't get why it does that.

BuzZz, I know what your saying, but this ain't the case. I pull up in first and put it in neutral and as soon as I back up it shuts off. It don't do that if I move forward and come to a stop. Tonight I paid attention to this and I reved it up some as I was backing up, and it still shut off on me.
It's almost like the bike knows I'm going to park it. I don't get it. I have been riding for 24 years and this is the first time something like this has happened.

I dunno, but why not sell tickets and put on performances. You can challange the audience to try, maybe one of them will figure out how to do it, and untill then, it's a nice little income.

I'm in!!! I can blow bubbles with a certain, not normally used for this function, body part. If I sing while doing that, and you do your magic trick, we could retire in a year.

Or at least cover beer costs like Highside said.
