Celebration Honors “Riding the Rim” to Save Coastal Louisiana
On Saturday November 4, the NorthShore Chapter of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G) will present a $1,200 donation to America’s WETLAND: Campaign to Save Coastal Louisiana during an annual celebration to recognize NorthShore H.O.G members. The donation will be presented to Terry Forrette, a NorthShore H.O.G member, who will promote America’s WETLAND in a 3-month, 12,000-mile motorcycle tour, entitled “Riding the Rim.”
Forrette’s tour around the perimeter of the United States will roll out on April 21, 2007 to raise funds and awareness to help restore Louisiana’s coast. “This is an exciting day for all of us,” said Forrette, H.O.G member and creator of ‘Riding the Rim.’ This donation will help the America’s WETLAND Campaign to raise national awareness about how the loss of Louisiana’s coast effects all Americans.”
America's WETLAND in coastal Louisiana, one of the largest estuaries and seventh largest delta in the world - home to 79 rare, threatened, and endangered species and wintering habitat for more than 5 million waterfowl and songbirds - is vanishing. The area loses 24 square miles a year, or the equivalent of a football field every 38 minutes. In addition, America's WETLAND is the nation's most important petrochemical complex and is vital to America's economic and energy security, as it produces or transports 30 percent of the nation's domestic crude oil and 34 percent of its natural gas, and also refines 16 percent of America's petroleum.
A long-time motorcycle enthusiast, Forrette will tour the perimeter of the contiguous 48 states to raise funds and to build support for federal assistance to halt severe coastal erosion in Louisiana. Coinciding with Earth Day commemorations, riders will interact with local conservation and environmental groups along the tour route to discuss the plight of wetlands in America and to invite local motorcycle groups to join in the ride.
The check presentation will occur at 12:00 noon at North Shore Harley Davidson on West I-10 Service Rd, Exit 266 in Slidell, LA.
