Im working on a 1980 KDX 80 and the little bastrd wont run. I rebuilt the carb twice, new reeds, 155 lbs compression, new rotor. Its an old point model that has one wire running from the stator to the coil. Thats it on electrical. The stator plate holds the stator, points, and condenser. I have tried 4 stators and it runs for 2 or 3 times then wont run again. It still has spark, but not enough under compression. I unpluged the kill switch to make sure that was not the cause and nothing changed. I ran an extra ground wire from the coil to the motor to make sure ground was good. Nothing changed. Plus the coil test good on my machine. What would cause four stators to go bad like that?????? HELP PLEASE!!!!!!! I hate this bike and want it out of my shop. LOL.

Stupid question. You've changed the spark plugs, right?

What happens to the stator after you've run it the 2 or 3 times? You said that it stops running after that. Which to me means that the stator stopped working? Could it be something as simple as a short in the wiring harness that's burning out your stator? Bad battery? Or a bad connection?

After 2 to 3 times the spark gets weaker, but it is still there when you put it to the head. Inside the cyliner I dont think it is sparking under compression. There is no battery on this bike. I have cleaned the connections multiple times. Remeber there is only one wire from the stator to the coil. The kill botton goes to the connection that connects the stator and the coil. I have unpluged the kill switch to make sure that is not the problem. The stators test at 3 ohms at the 2k mark on the mulitimeter. Then goes down to 1-2 ohms after it runs a couple of times.

Have you tried replacing the stator? Sounds like it's the only thing left.
