Motorcycle Group Raises Money For Family Of Injured Police Officer
Monday, November 13, 2006 - KSDK News 5 - ksdk.com

(KSDK) - Gunshots were heard, at the Fairview Heights Elks Club, Sunday afternoon.

Citizens were not in harm's way, however, because the ratio of law enforcement officers to citizens was about 10-1. Members of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club were holding a fundraiser for the family of wounded Belleville Police Sergeant Jon Brough. The name of the group pretty well outlines terms of membership. Members must be full-time, part-time, or retired law enforcement officers, and ride a motorcycle.

There is, however, apparently one more unspoken condition: Concern for your fellow officer.

At the meat shoot patrons paid three-dollars per attempt to shoot at a paper target with a twelve gauge shotgun. While winners get to claim a prize, much of the proceeds will go to the Brough family. And each time a shotgun blast echoed against the cars in parking lot of Elks Lodge 664, money was raised for Sgt. Brough's family's uncertain future. And there was enough gunfire to make veteran police officers nervous.

Inside, there was a raffle, bake sale, 50-50, an abundance of good will, and an overwhelming sense of generosity and concern.

Roger McLean is a St. Clair County Sheriff's Deputy and a Blue Knights member.

"Originally, we were just talking about making a donation from the chapter," said McLean. "Well, then word started spreading with fire departments, police departments, everybody like that started getting involved."

"I hope they can get some money, to help the policeman's family," said Jenny Nicolay.

Paul Pozsgay was asked what he hoped the money would go to. "Just expenses of being there at the hospital," said Pozsgay. "Traveling back and forth, food, motel."

"Well he got hurt doing his job, and nobody ought to be hurt doing their job," said Herrington.

Dan Havey spoke of Sgt. Brough. "He's an active member, and an all-around good guy, and a family man."

Illinois Chapter 14 of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club in Belleville currently has about 49 members.
