Thinking about buying a Ducati Monster, but I've heard that Ducati is unreliable. Is this true?

Nope. They are not unreliable. They just have a shorter valve adjustment schedule than japanese bikes. The standard maintenance interval is 6000 miles. However, that can be moved out to 17,000 miles with aftermarket mpb collets (an aftermarket part for the valves).

Plus, all of the new 07 ducatis are having a claimed 50% reduction in maintenance costs... I read that as extending the service intervals. Ducati is working very hard to compete with the japanese bikes in both cost and maintenance.

I have to check my valves every 6k miles, but I don't really care. It is worth doing that. Plus, Ducati has made it very easy to do, especially on the aircooled 2 Valve motors (like in the monter 695, S2R, S2R 1000, and the supersports). The S4R is the 4 valve testrastretta engine, which has a bit more maintenance involved.

Also suggest you look up posts by forum member TechTMW on Ducati valve adjustments. He is a Ducati tech and makes this topic very easy to understand:
