The BET: Hopkins vs Roberts in GP

#1 Unread post by QuietMonkey »

Highside and I have a little $5 bet on which Suzuki Team-mate in MotoGP will prevail over the other ... so i thought to start this thread so we can see how it chronologically plays out through the season

Synopsis so far...

Preseason:

Hopkins looking like a demon on fire in testing...

Highside and almost everyone I've talked with sez Hopkins will kick Roberts' butt, including a buddy of mine who i consider a very good judge of riders... oops... i took the bet :D

Round 1:

Hopper got some points (I'll check positions later)...

Roberts had an technical problem with the bike, DNF

Round 2:

Hopper was looking good in practice again... i think he outqualified Roberts by a second or soo.... ouch... an eternity in GP sometimes, but qualifying aint racing so we have to watch the race...

Hopper crashed out...

Roberts got some points (i'll check later)....

Round 3: China...

First practice (nothing to get excited about), Roberts fastest in wet practice...

Hopper: 13th... nothing to be concerned about it's only first day...

Both are still out of the Top-10 for points...

'Tis very early indeed... just starting the rumble and ramble rather than working on other important things...

I think it was a good bet on character... but the opinions of everyone else make it out to be a long shot. The championship is about consistency and speed... and although Hopper is fast, and Kenny's motivation has likely dropped a lot after many years of sour results (whether bike or rider) it's a good inner-team challenge.

There are many one-time champs, who never come back to the top after years and silently fade away. Some people have said KR is a one-time wonder and fading... and your note that got me betting was this which follows what others have said to me, "Hopkins will beat Roberts Jr. He consistently has in the past. Roberts has been complaining about everyting since he won the title, while big-eared John quietly got faster..."

Not that there isn't truth in that statement, it's just that you can only get soooo fast before the bike becomes the limitation. i think Kenny hit that BIKE limitation even when the year he won the championship, while Hopper has just worked himself up to Kenny's level of riding... now we'll see what happens next!

Dreamin' for a Suzuki on the freakin podium... (alhtough just as much as I'd like to see a Kawi on the podium - MORE COMPETITION!)... it's sad for Suzuki that Ducati and Kawi appear to have pretty decent packages already, especially Ducati's bike/rider combos!)... but this thread is all about Team Suzuki!

Kawasaki winning a race would be a hell of an achievement that I would love to see. Nakano is one of the best out there and the Kawasaki is already ahead of where the top guys were this time last year. The problem is everything else has progressed...... Kawi and Suzi need everyone else to hold up for 6 months and they will be there

I havent seen the race, but checked the results last night... seems Kenny took the lead within the opening laps (from 9th! on the grid) with Hopper right in there with him and then pooooched into the gravel trap.

tell me the bad news guys... i see he didnt get points. Hopper has been learning from the best. Looks like Kenny still has his youthful exhuberance intact, which is a good thing for a veteran.... of course no points is not.

The rain always shakes up the established order, but i guess not in the way i wanted it too. Well, these early races are shaking things out. It's great that Hopper beat Edwards and Hayden, although I want to see Edwards come on form.

Looks like my hope of a Kawi on the podium has already come true with Jacque in 2nd. They must be elated over there! mannn... i see a lot of guys wayyy down the finishing order.

Think of those free beer you could be enjoying Highside :p
