Leigh Adams: searching for the perfect 10 in 2007 Aussie title
Friday, November 17, 2006 - Motorcycling Australia - ma.org.au

Leigh Adams will be vying for his record tenth Australian Motorcycle Speedway Championship in this summer’s Linddales Labour Hire Australian Motorcycle Speedway Championship, kicking off on January 3 in Mildura.

Adams is keen to protect a quite amazing statistic – he has not been defeated in Australian title competition for the last three seasons running – or some 42 races in succession.

With current World Champion, Jason Crump in the 16-rider field, the bar has risen significantly for 2007. Adams says he has to take a different approach into the title this time around.

“This year’s title is going to be extremely tough,” said Adams. “Whilst I wouldn’t say the last two were walks in the park, certainly the field has greater depth than in recent seasons. I have to approach the title this year with a much different mindset.”

The European season just past was a challenging one for the Adams camp to say the least and with new equipment coming to Australia for the title ahead of season 2007; the 35-year-old Victorian is more motivated than ever.

“2007 could possibly be my last year in Grands Prix,” he mused. “I have to give it everything I have. Already my focus is standing on top of the podium at the end of the season holding the #1 jacket.

“Australia is where it all begins. Whilst it’s nice to be equal with Aub Lawson on nine Australian titles, the Australian title is something that means a great deal to me and to win it once again in such illustrious company is something I would love to do.”

Joining Adams in the Linddales Labour Hire Australian Title field will be World Champion, Jason Crump, fellow Grand Prix adversary Scott Nicholls, English Grand Prix wildcard Simon Stead, along with double Australian Under-21 Champion, Chris Holder and a number of Australia’s leading young riders.

“The racing at every round is going to be the most intense domestic Speedway seen in Australia for at least five years,” Adams asserted. “The Finals will be like a Grand Prix final, but just to make the Final is going to be difficult enough in the first place.”

With the confirmation that Leigh Adams will be competing, eight of the 12 seeded riders for the 2007 Linddales Labour Hire Australian Motorcycle Speedway Championship Series are now locked in place.

They will be joined by four additional seeds and four riders from a qualifying meeting to be conducted at Gillman Speedway in Adelaide (South Australia) on December 30, 2006.

The eight seeded riders (pending MA Commission approval) - in no particular order - are:

Jason Crump (Qld)
Leigh Adams (Vic)
Scott Nicholls (UK)
Simon Stead (UK)
Steven Johnston (WA)
Rory Schlein (SA)
Travis McGowan (Vic)

NOTE: Another four seeds to be added, plus an additional four from Linddales Labour Hire Australian Motorcycle Speedway Championship Series Qualifier.
