Sorry I'm new to all of this, and this is probably a stupid question. I'm planning on purchasing a drz400sm in the next year. I've been researching it and have been seeing a lot of talk about exhaust systems/airbox mods/ jets kits, etc. What do they mean?

More air + more fuel + better exhaust = more power.

If you are already concerned about the need for more power, then a 400cc machine is not for you.

First things first on a new bike...or any vehicle or toy for that matter - ride it stock first so you can feel and experience what you'd like to upgrade and why. You don't just do things for no reason or knowing what they do.

Another thing to consider: If you figure you'll sell the 400 in a season or two, don't waste any money on upgrades - you'll barely get back 50% if that on what you spend on that sort of thing.

If you're the type who could/would remove the upgrades when you're ready to sell (returning the bike to stock) and then ebay the do-dads separately you could do okay. You'd still run a risk of losing money.

There are some things that lend themselves to parting out: custom seats, exhaust systems are a couple.
