Brighter Christmas fund gets boost from bikers
Tuesday, December 12, 2006 - By Charmaine Smith - Independent Mail - independentmail.com

The check totaling $11,055 that Robert “Little Man” Fagg held in his hand Monday will be spent on everything from toys to overdue bills and clothes.

In that one slip of paper is a little bit of joy for dozens of families in the area — because all $11,055 goes to the Anderson Independent-Mail’s Brighter Christmas Fund.

But Mr. Fagg isn’t taking the credit. He said he’s just an organizer of the Anderson Toy Parade. The hundreds of sponsors and thousands of bikers are the ones who contributed to the piece of paper he proudly delivered to the Independent-Mail Monday.

“The glory goes to our sponsors and those who ride,” Mr. Fagg said.

Word of the event has spread so much over the years, with friends bringing their friends, that the toys collected at the parade will help 1,100 families. And the check will help many more.

For 26 years, the Confederates Motorcycle Club has put together the parade that rumbles down Main Street and Clemson Boulevard on the weekend after Thanksgiving. Thousands of bikers turn out — filling up the parking lot at the Watson Village Shopping Center — and bring enough toys to pack two large trucks.

Once the riding is finished, the bikers gather at the Civic Center and buy raffle tickets, T-shirts and sweatshirts. That money, plus what sponsors pitch in, goes into the check that Mr. Fagg hands over to the Brighter Christmas Fund. Each year, the parade raises between $10,000 and $12,000 in cash to donate to the Brighter Christmas Fund.

The club holds the toy parade each year in memory of Jack Hurley, a former newspaper employee and rider. Monday’s donation brought the Brighter Christmas Fund total to $65,527.

However, the need is still great. Even with an application deadline for those needing assistance that passed nearly two weeks ago, people needing help from the Brighter Christmas Fund are still calling.

To help needy families, clip out the coupon below and send a donation to the SunTrust Bank, 907 N. Main St., Anderson, SC 29621 to the attention of the Brighter Christmas Fund. Those wanting to donate specific items, like appliances or furniture, should call (864) 634-8310.
