GALVESTON — Mardi Gras! 2007 has a new krewe that plans to rev up Galveston’s 12-day party.

The recently formed Krewe Du Vroom will join this year’s parade lineup with an all-motorcycle gang of revelers.

Michael Hightower, member of the Galveston park board of trustees and one of the krewe’s organizers, said the motorcycle enthusiasts got the idea to join the Mardi Gras tradition after watching the increasing popularity of the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally.

“Since people seem to enjoy the Lone Star Rally, we thought it would be great to have our own scaled-down version as a part of Mardi Gras,” he said in a Mardi Gras Galveston press release.

The Rally, which takes place in late October, is the island’s second largest event, bringing 200,000 people across the Causeway every year. Mardi Gras is Galveston’s largest event.

Mardi Gras 2007 begins Feb. 9 and runs through Feb. 20. The celebration will feature 12 parades and 19 krewes.

The longest running group and the one with the largest parade is the Knights of Momus. Their theme this year is “A Salute to the Animal Kingdom.”

The Krewe Du Vroom will lead off the annual celebration’s second weekend at 7 p.m. on Feb. 16. The parade begins and ends at 26th Street and Santa Fe Place. All bikers are welcome to join the fun.
