A.B.A.T.E. of Ohio Inc. Clinton County held its 20th annual Toys for Tots recently, according to a media release.
Each year, A.B.A.T.E. members deliver toys and clothes to over 200 children in Clinton County, in addition to donating to several other charities, including the Shriners Children's Hospital and other counties' Toys for Tots.
They begin their Toys for Tots effort with a Poker Toy Run, which they map out over a 60-mile run, with a few stops in between for refreshments.
They continue to the last stop, where participants are treated to home cooking; a roast hog; motorcycle games; live music by Reeking Havoc, Wide Load and Southern Express; and overnight camping.
The money and toys they raise from the Poker Toy Run joins other donations from area businesses, including McCoys Catering, R&L Carriers and Ralph Buss Law Offices, and from the McCord family for hogs, also.
"Without the support of the members and friends and family, we'd never be able to do it," said chairpersons Haskel Combs Jr. and wife Pam Combs in the media release.
The members and friends "…really work hard and every child is shopped for carefully by each individual. We try and get the main things on the child's list, but sometimes it's hard. The older the child is, the more expensive the gifts are. But we try and get as close to what they want as we can, and spend the same amount on each.
"We then take the presents and wrap them in another member's garage, name tag them and sort them by child and family to be delivered by the same members and friends.
"It gets sort of hectic at times - when you take 200 children, 67 to 80 families, and try and make sure they have what they want and keep them sorted."
