I am having probelms with the shifter on my bike. Just recently it started acting up. What is happening is that the shifter is not returning to center after a shift and I have to do it manually with my foot before shifting to the next gear. Any ideas what may be causing this?

Thanks

With no specific knowlage of your bikes engine, I would say that the shifter drum has lost a spring or the detent mechanisim has worn out.

If you list the make and model..... ......someone may have more detailed info for you.

Sssoooo glad I got out of the partsman bizz.....

I agree with buzz that that the shifter drum may have lost it's spring but some thing you might want to do before tarring into the bike is.

1-change your oil
2-If your shifter has a grease fitting ad grease
3-If no grease fitting try and spread some grease around the shifter seal or case.

If these or other suggestions don't work then you might be in for some work.

Good Luck!!!

and post back!

Thanks guys.

I have had a lot of bikes but have never had this happen.

The bike is a '75 xs650 twin. I think that the shaft is binding on the seal, I will investigate this weekend and see what I can find. I may have to dig into the tranny. That is always fun.

It turns out it was the seal dragging on the shaft. A little lube did the trick.
