Caught Speeding

A man was driving home late one afternoon, and he was driving above the speed limit. He noticed a police car with all its lights on in his rear view mirror.
He thought, "I can outrun this guy," so he floored it and the race was on. The cars raced down the highway -- 60, 70, 80, 90 miles an hour. Finally, as his speedometer passed 100, with the cruiser on his rear bumper, the guy came to his senses, "Aw, man, I'm never gonna get away with this," and gave up. He pulled over to the curb, expecting a huge fine at the very least.
The police officer got out of his cruiser and approached the car, leaned down and said, "Listen, mister, I've had a really lousy day, and I just want to go home. Give me an excuse I've never heard before and I'll let you go."
The man thought for a moment and said..."Three weeks ago, my wife ran off with a policeman. When I saw your cruiser in my rear view mirror, I thought you were that officer and you were trying to bring her back!"
The officer said, "Have a nice day!"
