timing issues

I recently bought a 1985 Kawasaki KLR250 that turned out to have some problems, (water in the oil) We went in and fixed that problem, also ended up changing all the gaskets (head gasket,o-rings, etc.) the problem ended up to be in the water pump, but during the reassembly could not get the timing right. My question is....Do the timing marks face each other, face away from each other, or face the same direction when at TDC? I have gotten conflicting answers on this, does anyone know the CORRECT way to time this bike?

Most engines are set-up so that the timing marks face each other, but not all of them.
I don't know how yours is set-up, but I bet the service manual does. You should have one for any bike you own, just on general principles. And especially for times like this....
