insurance technicalities

just a question...

i have just turned 18 years old and have decided to go down the bike route, iseeing as my cbt will expire in a few months and i dont wanna pay for it again, so im going to do my proper bike test.

however i never got a moped so i have no years ncb.

at my age youre only allowed a restricted bike of upto 33bhp, BUT, how much is insurance generally? and does it vary from bike to bike? because surely if an r1 with 33 bhp will be similar to insure as a 250 with 33 bhp?

or does it not work like that?

and how much is insurance generally for an 18 yr old with no ncb on a 33 bhp bike?

Not sure about England, but over here insruance is also based on the cost of the bike. R1 costs a LOT more then a cb, so you're going to be paying a LOT more.

Then again, I could be wrong.

but say if the two bikes cost the same, and the only difference is the make and model, both 33bhp

would there be a difference?

Around here different companies use different criteria. Some go only by displacement. Some go by the claims history. Some go by power-to-weight. Some go by type of bike. Some combine two or more of these criteria. Generally, larger displacement sport bikes are the most expensive. Sport and toouring models with lots of bodywork are more expensive than naked or dualsport models because the bodywork is expensive to replace, and can be easily damaged with even a minor mishap.

Example, full coverage for a 2006 Yamaha TW200 ran from US$248 to US$713 per year. Coverage for a 2006 Kawasaki EX250, priced $700 less than the TW, ran from US$848 to US$1913 per year.
