Motorcycle races....????

Sorry to be such a newbie. Whats the difference between moto GP, ama and supersport bike racing? i read it all up on wikipedia but still confused. Which one is more prestigious? You really can't say one is better than the other because it would be like comparing apples and oranges right? Is it like comparing formula one, cart and nascar?

And how is it that these races influence a customers choice in a sportbike? There are numerous races with numerous classes of cc, so whats all the confusion? If a 600cc bike can win as easily as a 1000cc bike in their respective races, than whats the whole deal with wanting more cc's? And the 1000cc bike isn't even used in the more prestigous races. Like you would think the cbr1000rr would be used in motogp. But its actually another bike called the RC212V, which isn't even made available to the public. So whats it all about?!?!?!? and why do i feel lost.

Basicly, if motorcycles are as unique and different in their differing classes and races and in the public sector than why does everyone make buying and riding a motorcycle such a hassle.

HELP. Any suggestions please. Thanks.

I think this is flame-bait.

So I'll start. MotoGP and F1 have the most money, the most exposure, the most technology.

Take a rider/driver from those classes and put them in another class (AMA or Nascar) and they would lose. But probably not for long.

As far as prestige goes, that's all in the mind of the viewer. Which one do you prefer? Are the AMA fans going to get pissed that MotoGP is more prestigious everywhere except America? Are Nascar fans upset that the rest of the world prefers F1?

And what is that deal with wanting more cc's? Power and torque. Ever ridden a motorbike?

MotoGP is like F1. The bikes are unobtainable. This season they are going to race 800cc bikes. However, there are other series for 600cc and 1000cc manufacturers, all around the world that lead up to WSB (World Superbikes). Are these the best riders in the world? Maybe. The most prestigious? in someone's eyes I'm sure.

Who is making buying a motorbike a hassle? The variety matches more than the competitive classes. Bikes are like shoes. There are bikes for every personality, and if a new personality emerges, then you can modify away.

Flame away!

MotoGP bikes are purpose built race bikes - they get the cutting edge technology long before any street bike will see it, and they get improved on and redesigned as the season goes on. With the MotoGP bikes now restricted to 800cc as opposed to the previous 990cc, expect to see a big factory team go through a couple of different engine designs by the end of the season.

All other classes of racing use commercially available bikes, with the amount of tweaking, tuning, and modifying done to them is determined by the finances of the team.

The 800cc bikes are already beating some of the records held by the 990s! Yikes, and they haven't even really started development on them yet.

Some classes also allow only certain amounts of tweaks, there is a superstock class where you need to run all factory stock bikes etc etc etc.
