Hey, my name is Zach, i'm 17, i live in Austin TX and i've been riding a 150cc moped for about a year now. since i cant really call it a motorcycle (moped stands for mobile PEDESTRIAN) i wont list it in my signature and get flamed...
just wondering if said moped qualifies as a first bike or if i should get a 250-450cc streetbike before moving higher; keep in mind that a moped has no shifting and gets 60-65 mpf with the wind at my back.
Thanks

Heya, welcome to the TMW forums!
So Zach, honestly I think that all depends on the next motorcycle you are looking at.
Do I think you are ready for a vtx1300+ or a 600cc+ sportbike? Well, making a huge generalization here, no.
I think you could have some fun on a 650cc bike like a Hyosung Gt650R, Kawasaki Ninja 650r, or a Suzuki Sv650/Sv650S.
Also, 250 and 500cc bikes are still MORE than adequate.
But honestly, I wouldn't go above 650 yet, unless it was a cuiser style... then an 800. Not any higher because of power, but because of weight. If you compare your moped to a ninja 500r its gonna feel like the 500 is really big and heavy. Which its not.
Edit: You can get up to 105+mph on a ninja 250r, and faster than 98% of the cars you will see on the road. Aka don't race a z06 or european exotics now M'kay!

get a small bike.
im 17 too from california and have been riding for half a year, I was 16 when I started and wanted a R6. But there were no 250s or anything near this small in the ads anywhere so it was either a R6 or a "poo poo" bike from ebay. I followed the advice from these folks and just got the 200cc from ebay. and im glad i did.
