Dealers See More Female Motorcycle Riders
Sales Among Women Up About 30 Percent
May 3, 2005
WARREN, Ohio -- Motorcycle dealers say they are seeing an increasing number of women taking to the open road riding on two wheels instead of four.
Owners of several dealerships say they have seen sales to women increase 20 to 30 percent in recent years. America's top motorcycle maker Harley Davidson says ten percent of its sales in 2003 were to women, compared with two percent in 1985.
Motorcycle dealers say new lightweight bikes that are lower to the ground make it easier for women to ride. Dealers also are expanding women's clothing lines and hiring more female employees.
Motorcycle enthusiast Nova Chasser says she got her first Harley Davidson motorcycle three years ago and has seen riding among women increase recently. Three of her friends got their licenses last year.
