hello,
my 1986 suzuki gs550l, I had taken it apart to clean the carbs, I thought that the CGI ignition went bad because I got it wet, I went and bought another, (used) but I still have no spark? maybe there is a wire loose? or ? I checked the fuses but they all look good, also at the same time my electric starter stopped working so I had to cross that solenoid thing withy a screw driver? how can I test the CGI inniter? they are expensive? could it be the coils? I dod not take the coils off, only unplugged a lot of wires around the air cleaner and carbs? any wiring diagrams around? or is there a relay or something like that?any help woul be greatly appreciated?

The problem must be the CGI. Computer Generated Ignition is just pixels in space, not real. Like all them snakes on that plane movie.

But I bet your CDI (capacitor discharge ignition) is fine. If your starter will not work with the switch at the same time you got no spark, I would start by looking at that switch and the wiring associated with it. Or maybe the key switch. It sounds like the system is dumping juice to ground someplace.

It's a place to start anyways...

Thanks, yeah kind screwed up CGI, confused there for a minute, I will start tracing the wires down, because I have tried several "CDI's" I know that they were used but they came off a running bike, a friend of mine had the same bike, is there anyway to even test a CDI?, thanks for your help, I am new to a forum site, I really appreciate all the help.

Most bike shops can and will test your cdi box for nothing or a small fee if you take it in to them.

But I doubt that's the problem. If you've had several units on the bike with the same results, the odds are astronomical against all of them being pooched.

A bad ignition switch, damaged and shorting wire, poor connection.... I would almost bet your problem lies in there someplace.

I gotta agree with what BuzZz says. If you need to jump the solenoid then there's a problem with the primary starting circuit. Look inside the switch first...

And check the charge on your battery.

I could only get the e/es model, but it should give you an idea for the make of your bike nontheless..

you must be missing something, a fiend-ish hidden wire of the sort. The cgi / cdi uses the frame as the ground, so I has to be bolted on the frame to work, you can't simply plug it in. I think it is your solenoid for some odd reason. oh yeah and use your original cdi.
