Ok, hi i am new to these forums. My name is gabriel fisher and I have had 2 years of riding a 250 TTR moutin bike, i quit riding for about a year an a half. I shatterd my shoulder in a wreck. I was racing my brother and well lets put it this way. I was being young and dumb and we were in the mountins... Since that acident I chose to sell my bike, Well me being me. I hoped on my friends 250 ninja the other day... I FELL, i mean it was like love at first sight. Now i am set on geting a new bike. I am 15, I live in oklahoma. I think I am a fairly decent driver. I can handle my self pretty well on a *mountin bike*. But I want a decent sized *speed* bike. I dont know much, ok I dont know jack shiet about street bikes at all! I wiegh 230 lbs and i am 6'2. I finaly convinced my mom at the end of may I can get another bike. What would be a good bike for me? I heard honda CBRs are good. Ninja 650rs... I am a speed freak. I want enough to please me but not enough to kill my self on the first day. Also i dont know how to get a licence. I just got my perment 1 month ago. In oklahoma you must wait 6 months after you get your perment to get your drivers licens. So i will get my drivers licence for a car some time in july-agust. After that how do i get a bike licence? My budget is like 2300-3000 g's I am looking at used. So please give me models years manufactuer ect. I plan on going out and test driving ALOT but i want to narrow it down first. If it is out of my price ranged uesd post it any ways it will help in some way shape or form. Thank you all.
~gabriel.
P.S. I am sorry my grammer/spelling are t sux. I just got done typing 10 pages for class tomorow and am egere to get off, PCE
O i am an athleet so when i said 230 lbs i am still in decent shape. Defensive end.

That thread is at the top of the New Bikers Forum....i.e. here.
The general consensus is that being a speed freak will get you killed. Unless you keep it to the track.

You keep stating you want a speedy bike and also put in your weight a lot. Here's some news: going fast in a straight line gets boring on a bike, quickly. Anyone can wrench on the throttle and hold on.
The best part about motorcycling is the corners. And you don't need a bike with 75, 100 or 200 HP to enjoy those.
Keep that in mind. Purchase a low-HP bike, enjoy those corners and when you upgrade later, you'll be a better rider for it.

Keep in mind i used to ride dirt bikes. Majority of the stuff i did in the mountins was corners going down hill. I know what the riding styles are, i just need some street bike smarts on what would be a decent bike for me.

I'm going to agree with what Skier said. Everyone thinks they're in the top 10%. 90% of us (myself included) are wrong. Better safe then sorry, your first bike - not your last bike, cheaper insurance, ease into it, stress on previously broken bones. There are a variety of (what I consider valid) reasons to stick with the starter bikes.
What sort of dirtbike did you used to ride? Sucks that took a header on it, I'd cry if someone made me try to sell mine.

i also ride mountain bikes pretty hard and I can tell you this: mountain biking has nothing to do at all with motorcycling, at all.
and
I heard honda CBRs are good. Ninja 650rs... I am a speed freak.
no... just no...
a CBR IS going to kill you
A ninja 650R will kill you a little less.
if your a speed freak with a CBR 600 or 650R at the age of 15, you'll probably end up on the ground with your stomach cut open with your guts spooling out and probably your legs amputated and maybe youd be dead.
KEEP IN MIND that cornering on a mountain bike has nothing at all with cornering on a motorcycle. Motorcycles weigh 300+ pounds and turning is mostly by leaning.
Being an avid mountain biker for the past 5 years of my life, I KNOW that unless you are going 30+ MPH, you aint gonna lean for shizzle on a mountain bike.
ALSO, YOUR YOUNG, LIKE I WAS WHEN I GOT MY BIKE and I also wanted to go fast.. I took it out on the country for the first maybe 7 days to go as fast as I could. I havent done anything like that for the past 6 months now. Going unnescarly fast is stupid on a motorcycle which you will later slowly find out as you ride more. it'll get you killed faster and probably a $200 dollar ticket. anyone can go fast, just give it throttle and hang on tight...
like everyone else here said... the real fun is cornering. I love cornering hard and fast. Its 10x more exciting to go lean hard around a corner at 30 MPH than to go 80 mph or whatever is fast for you.
whatever. just get a low HP bike and you wont regret it.
Oh yeah by the way Im not an expert but it doesnt take an expert to figure this one out. also im not trying to sound rough, im just trying to sound... truthful

Sigh... every one is telling me stuff i dont want to hear. What would u guys consider a *beginer* bike.. I am not saying i am going to go out and race on the streets or go 60 in a 40. I just love speed and would take all the chances i have to go to the track. KEEP IN MIND i am a BIG dude. So a 250 ninja or w/e is a lil girls bike to me.. When i got on my friends i was thinking jesus this is slow.

well the stuff you don't want to hear is what every body is going to tell you if you post something like this. What do you want people to say??
like 99% of the people here, we know you probably aren't going to race on the street, BUT thats not the important part, what most seniors here are worried about is being at the wrong place and the right time.
For example, hmmm,
lets say that you were riding around then the roads got a little congested..
I'm pretty sure a beginner would not want to be on a 150 HP motorcycle with a razor sharp throttle, razor sharp brakes in a traffic jam. worst ever
or
You did something and your RPMs jumped a couple Ks, then you just let go of the throttle, or something like that.
or
your leaning around a corner and you give it a little bit too much gas your on the ground.
HERE SINCE IM SO NICE ILL POST VIDEOS OF NOOBS ON BIG BIKES
well this guy isnt a noob so it proves my point more

not slow

anyway, it seems that you are not going to start off little, I'm am not going to show which bikes I think will kill you. The CBR, your dead, you have NO IDEA how razor sharp the throttle is, you will overwheelie minimum. The ninja will probably kill you also. Just something as simple as giving too much throttle in a corner will low side/send you down.
I suggest the suzuki DRZ400SM. 400cc is enough power especially for a beginner.
I also suggest the ninja 500.
And the Suzuki GS500F
you need to know that most sportbikes are inline 4's, (4 pistons lined up) crusers are usually v twin's (2 huge pistons at like a 45 degree angle) and standards are usually dual twin's (2 pisons side by side) different bikes have different characteristics as you will find out when you test ride them.
