Hey guys,

So I bought myself a used 2006 Suzuki SV650s with about 400 miles on it.
I didn't drive it home from the dealer because i wasnt ready for the streets. So i get my new toy home and decided to take it for a spin. Everything went good and i felt pretty comfortable with it considering im a pretty small guy. But the other day i dropped it at a stop and broke the Right front blinker off. I was pretty upset. So today i was takin a turn too slow in 2nd gear, and it felt like i was gonna stal it so i gave it a little more gas and realized i was going to fast for the turn .... dropped it again and i broke the shifter, the clutch, and the mirror on the left side..
Im just curious, is it normal to drop the bike a couple times when learning? i just hope after i get it repaired it will be my last time droppin it .... good thing im ok though.

Yes.

Well, maybe not normal, but it happens often enough. That's why newbs are often advised to buy used for their first bike.

BTW, did you take a MSF course? If not, please do so.

it's happens to most people.

it's not really a guarantee. there are people riding for so many many years that hasn't dropped their bike.

i believe it's mostly dependent on how much you're willing to risk and try w/ your bike. if you like to learn how to ride like racers or just really really fast... then crashing shouldn't be a surprise to you.

I dropped my bike many times while learning to ride. If they'd had the MSF course back then, I probably could have avoided 90% of those drops. They do a pretty good job of steering you clear of the basic noob mistakes that cause low speed drops. The plus side is that you get to do it on their bikes, so yours can avoid the trauma.

Once I got the basics down (the hard way) I was pretty much drop free. Haven't scratched a bike since 1988 (knock wood).

Riding since August, after the MSF course, and so far haven't dropped my bike. But I've always been good at keeping in perspective motion and gravity...

ive dropped my bike twice.

first time was when I was backing out of a parking spot at walmart after I and this little crazy, crazy kid with a cart came hurtling at me so i put the brakes on and it just fell. I got a major clutch lever bend-ige. I bent it back with two monkey wrenches.

second time was when I was trying to jump on my bike GTA style from the front, starting from the front of my bike, jumping over the windshield, doing a 180 and then landing on the seat.. didnt go to well and the 3rd time i tried, my left achilles tendon got caught on the clutch lever and I flew back grabbing on to the handle bars and taking the bike down with me. didnt land on me so i was pretty lucky

Both were in my first week of riding. havent dropped it since.. so dropping it in the first week or so is normal. and you got a pretty big bike so it should be more normal.

Actually i have not taken the MSF course. But seeing how many people recommend it I think Ill be doing so. Thanks a lot guys for the replies. I was just curious because its been less then a week and im already lookin at a nice little bill for repairs.
But i am not gonna Put a sheet over it and close the garage-
Its awesome riding, i love it, even going 30 mph, it feels like im flying hehe

I have been riding since July and have yet to drop my bike. You should read my riding on ice story cause I did almost drop it "riding on ice" and have managed to keep it up. However I know a guy who has been riding for 40+ years and he just dropped his bike for the first time last year. So im with wrider. 1500 miles and not dropped yet. that doesnt mean I wont and obviously I havent been riding for very long (dam winter is keepng my mileage low).

Yeah man, i guess some people (like me) learn from there mistakes, thats the way i see it, its only going to help me. I couldnt even imagine what it is like to ride on ice. The first time i dropped my bike was in the rain and it was one of first times ive ever riden it. (stupid stupid decision) but i was soo excited about gettin out there. All i do is read these forums because it can only help me

3 days after I started riding for the first time I got caught in torrential rains to where I had to slow down to 25mph because the water got so deep it was coming up over my pips on my shadow in spots. I also stopped under an overpass because it started hailing and that kinda hurt. Let me tell you that suxored. I also rode my bike home the first day doing about 50 or so miles on 70mph speedlimit highway. I did 45 for a while (min speed) then went up to 55 and then with about 35 miles left I went up to 65 for all but the last 5 miles when I finally got the guts to hit 70. This bike didnt have a windshield on it at the time either. My wife followed me the whole time to so that helped some.
