Best RPM range for maximizing fuel efficiency?

#1 Unread post by krisptoast »

Yeah, not the most exciting question, but hey, sometimes you just want to eek as many miles as you can out of a tank. I am sure this varies widely depending on the bike...I have a Ninja 500, and I generally cruise around at 3-4k RPM. If anyone knows what the best range for fuel efficiency is, I would appreciate the input.

every bike has a different sweet spot, its that spot when ur going a certain speed in high gear and you find urself backing off the throttle keeping that same speed and at the speed you can hear the engine at a relaxing sound, for my bike M50 that sweet spot is in between 50-55MPH on a level road in high gear

There is no such thing as the best RPM range for fuel effeciency because it depends upon what gear you are in and what speed you are attempting to maintain.

The general rule, of course, is to keep your RPMs as low as possible at all times, if you want to use the least fuel. So if you're on the highway, get your bike into the highest gear and keep the RPMs low. If you ride down the highway in 3rd gear and keep the RPMs at redline, you're gonna burn gas a lot faster.

what really helps on the 500r is tucking in behind the windscreen. Alot less wind resistance. I usually ride within the 4.5k-5.5k rpm range. Don't get crazy with accelerating either... if you keep slightly ahead of other cars you will save alot of gas rather than just opening up the throttle after every stop.
