Rear Brake Trouble

#1 Unread post by 45ACP »

I hate for my first post to be a cry for help, but here it goes.

I just purchased a 1980 Suzuki GS1100E. Everything on the bike is in great condition for its age, however I am having a problem. Once the rear brake is depressed, the pedal is not springing back into place. I was told it could be the spring on the brakes, as they are the originals. Should I replace these, and if so, where do I find them? Also, what else could cause this problem? Any adivce is appreciated, I am new into the riding world, and already addicted. I can't wait to get this out on the road, but need to get this resolved first.

Since the photo, I have removed the trunk and bar.

You should be able to buy parts at your local Suzuki dealer. You could also try bikebandit.com or ronayers.com. Of course you've taken apart the lever and lubericated all the bushings, right.
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

You appear to have a rear disc break. I don't think there is a return spring on that one. The pedal is usually connected to the master cylinder. If the master cylinder is not returning the pedal to its normal position, that might be the issue. How does the rear brake feel when you press on the pedal? Is it firm, or do you get a soft sinking of the pedal?

The pedal is firm when you depress it, then it will reset about half way, but has another 1/4 inch to go.
Nothing like an old bike!
