hello, i guess ill start off by introducing my self. my name is darwin and i am 18 yrs old and i currently go to college in new york city. i have been interested in motorcycles(sportbikes in particular) sinsce i was 15. today was my first actual lesson and i was really excited :D at first i wanted to get a yamaha r1 as my first bike(can u belive that) but now after todays class i would not even wanna get on one. today i took my lesson on a 250 cc bike and thought it was powerful imagine a 1000cc bike i totally agree with the more expirienced riders and their recomendations on what a 1st bike should be. i am looking on buying a motorcycle this summer and i would appreciate if anyone has any suggestions on what type of bike i should get or tips that would help me become a better/ safe rider. thanks in advance. :D

:welcome2:

I'd say getting lessons is definitely a good start. Don't forget when planning to buy a motorcycle to factor in the price of gear and insurance.

As for beginning bike recommendations; check out the Beginner's Guide. There are also stickies and the Learn To Ride A Motorcycle page which is downloadable in PDF format (Created and maintained by Dragonhawk).

Have Fun, Good Luck and Stay Safe Out There!

The Ninja 500-R is an excellent bike for a few reasons:

You are probably still in the fear stage of riding... It can last a while. The 250 seems like a lot, and frankly, it is. It is a tiny bike with more horses than it needs. You will get used to it.

The Ninja 500-R is a quick bike, but not so powerful that it will try getting away from you. You can be lazy about shifting gears as it has a wide power range. It is a bike you can grow with. I have been riding the wife's 500-R since last November when my Ninja 636 was stolen, and now have a new Vulcan 900, but still commute on the 500-R. It is not disappointing. Handles like a dream and is reliable.

Eventually, you might want to go to a supersport, but I really believe the 500-R is the all-around best bike on the road.

Good luck with the classes and the purchase.

i like the ninja so it would not be a problem to get one. i would not say i am in the fear stage though on sunday it was my first lesson and i was going on to second gear going 20 to 25 miles per hour, this was probably because i have been on a bike before in dominican republic(where i was born in) but it was only a couple of times, i was still very cautious of my surroundings. i could say i really had a blast riding the bike once again!!! :D im thinking about taking another lesson this weekend before taking my mfs course :D

that bike is a little much for a beginner especially with 123bph. try to find something closer to 50-60hp.

I have not even seen one in person, but understand it is a beast. It is a supersport to be sure. If a 250 feels like a lot of bike, you'll want to admire the supersports from a distance. Besides, you always drop a bike when you are a new rider - always... Better to drop something inexpensive ;-)
