So, my bike isn't starting. I think it's not getting enough gas or something, I put a dab of starting fluid in my carb and it started up. What would you suggest I do next?

Check to see if the petcock is set to on.

Check to see if the fuel line is hooked up.

Check to see if you have a vacuum line, and if it's hooked up.

Check to see if the fuel filter is clogged.

Ok, my fuel pump is working, my fuel lines are all intact, there is no petcock valve on the motorcycel that I can find. It's a 95' btw. Also, could someone help me out, I don't know where to find the fuel filter

If it's carbed there should be a petcock somewhere.

The fuel filter is most likely in the gas tank itself.

Just so you know, some bikes (like my Volusia) had a vacuum petcock. Whenever the bike started up the petcock opened itself up and whenever it shut down, the petcock shut down too...

There isn't anything else too check. You said it's not getting fuel... that's everything between the tank and the carbs. You're saying it's all fine.

If it were me, I'd double check for the vacuum line to the petcock, because that's the most likely culprit. Then I'd check to see if the gas tank were possible vacuum locking due to a clogged vent.

Alternately haul off the carbs and clean them out, because it's likely that in the year all of your jets have been varnished shut, and your float needles might even be stuck closed.

What I did was, I hooked up the gas tank to a car batter to test the fuel pump. When I touched the wires to the battery the fuel pump came on and shot gas right into a container I had set up. There's only two lines coming off the tank, the line that goes to the carbs and the line that goes to the reserve tank. Then it has a electrical hook up for the fuel pump. I have the carbs off, about to clean the jets and check out the floats.

My carbed FJ has a fuel pump and no petcock, just a spigot off the bottom of the tank. Yamaha relies an the fuel pump to stop the fuel flowing out.

Micky Mouse system IMHO, but it seems to work. The reason they run a fuel pump in the first place was to eliminate a tank venting issue they had, and rather than design a decent vent system, the decided to suck the snot out of the tank instead.....

If your pump is delivering fuel to the carbs, but your not getting fuel into the cylinders, the problem lies with-in the carbs. De-gunkin' time, methinks.

Anyways, I got some of the bowls off. I took out the float and float pin. So it looks like there are two brass jets. I blew through them and sprayed carb cleaner all in it. Hopefully she'll be running tomorrw.
