Okay folks, PLEASE take heed to this notice 'cause I'm speaking from very recent first hand knowledge here.

ALL HD owners whose ride have cruise control and, especially also having a cigarette lighter. Should you ever have the misfortune to be travelling down the road with your cruise control engaged and, for some reason blow the accessory fuse, YOUR CRUISE CONTROL WILL NOT DISENGAGE BY THROTTLING/BRAKING/CLUTCHING!!!!! Those with cigarette lighters, that use them, already know these can occasionally cause the little 15amp fuse to blow. This is especially prevalent if, for some reason, your lighter has been dropped and has a small dent in it. That little dent will cause the housing to straight to ground and blow the fuse, immediately. The only way you have of knowing this happened, other than your lighter not working, is your turn signals/brake lights/horn will not function. Unless you've been through this before, you don't know about the cruise control. The only way to disengage it is to manually shut it down on your dashboard.

This unfortunate scenario happend to me upon returning from a mission in PA on Wednesday. The only way I knew I had blown a fuse was the factory installed radar detector quit working. Cruising at 75 mph and realizing the need to get off the highway to investigate the problem is NOT the time to learn you cannot disengage your cruise control via the normal method.

Please pass this information along to all your friends. You COULD just save someone's life.
Respects,
Joe
Follow-up Post 11 April 2007;
For everyone's information, I just got off the phone with the NTSB after registering a safety complaint on this issue.

The operator recommends EVERY HD owner that has experienced this to call in and register their own complaint. You will need a date (guess, if you have to) of when it happened and a description of the event; what you were doing, what happened, what measures you had to take and what, if anything, your dealer did to resolve this issue. You'll be issued a case number and they'll send you a copy of what you've said, which you are to sign and make any additions to, if necessary, then return to them for investigation (Government red tape, you know!). To me, the more that call in about this problem, the faster it may be resolved.

NTSB phone number is: 1-888-327-4236. Expect a hold time unless calling early.

Respects,
Joe
