Draggin Jeans

#1 Unread post by VTRider »

Hey all,
Does anyone have a pair (or pairs) of these riding pants? They don't have hard armor built in but they do have kevlar linings sewn in to lessen damage in slides on asphalt.

Curious if anyone has had the unfortunate luck to actually put these to the test...

A small review would be great if possible.

Thanks

We wear them. They have not been tested in a crash though. Free knee pads came with our jeans. And they just velcro into place.

I had the excitement of crashing my knee into the ground with my Draggins on. I was sure there should have been a hole in my jeans (according to the previous similar spill I took in regular jeans that did tear), however there was not.

As far as they wear, they are comfortable and warmer than regular jeans because of the lining.

They definitely won' be as good as a nice thick leather, but I feel they are better than regular jeans.

I bought Teknic kevlar lined jeans which are very similar. They are much more comfortable than any "proper" riding pants and are great for the warmer weather. However they dont offer as much protection of course. I figure its a heck of alot better than just regular jeans though.

Luckily ive never had to test them.

Well, its just my opinion. But I guess id consider "proper" riding pants to be leather or textile, with armor in the knees and hips. But even with vents they can get hot in warm weather, and are really uncomfotable when walking around off-bike. Thats why I got the kevlar jeans, more comfotable and casual looking.

i was asking because this is the hardest of all riding gear for me to figure out. first of all, i live in NC and our summers can be pretty hot (some 100 + days with major humidity). but when it gets cool/cold it can be pretty biting.

for the colder days i guess it's not as difficult for me because i can see wearing jeans and then having some sort of riding pants over top.

the summer is completely different. where i said first of all... the secondly is - i'm a campus minister. that means that i don't have any sort of "dress code" for work and once it gets close to warm enough i'm in shorts and a t-shirt.

are there good riding pants that can be cool in the summer and worn over shorts and still be protective?

all of this is in this thread because i had thought that draggin jeans were a good option for my summers. although i don't like wearing jeans in the summer, i can. and i could take shorts in my back pack to change into.

now, i don't really want leather pants. are there any decent textiles that would work for me? or would draggin jeans be my best bet?

Well I got two pairs of riding pants, the kevlar jeans for warm weather...and a pair of thick textile pants with padding in the knees and hips for cold weather. Ive ridden in temps down to the 40's with the textile pants and my legs were ok.

Although I feel safer with the textile pants, they are thick and heavy and I would probably be sweating buckets in the summer with them on. I think its easier to just buy 2 separate pairs of riding pants instead of trying to find the a perfect all-weather pair.

Another option in hot weather is mesh pants, but personally I dont really trust mesh gear. Doesnt seem like it would hold up in the event of a spill. But again, its better than nothing.

dean owens- I would suggest looking into the mesh/textile convertible pants like the ones Joe Rocket and Fieldsheer (and probably lots of other outfitters...) offer. You can throw them over your shorts in the summer and they still have the armor and protection you would be looking for.

We picked up the Joe Rocket Alter Ego overpants. They have a waterproof liner and also a mesh strip that can be opened or closed. So far they are warm and dry and cool when they need to be. You can wear them as overpants or regular pants and that vented mesh strip makes a big diffrence.

After taking a spill in jeans (they didn't tear but my knee was rashed nicely) I am overjoyed to have my pants now. So far they haven't been to hot, they are waterproof if the liner is in and its good stuff.

Riding pants are nice and all but NOT while sitting in a lecture for a couple of hours. I bought a pair of Icon fully-armored jeans but to my dismay they were just too without the wind going through you. So instead, I purchsaed a pair of the Icon "standard" jeans instead. They are much lighter and practical in every day use.
