Extra Storage

#1 Unread post by TKDean »

I know that bike storage compartments are pretty small. so ill probably get either a back pack or a tank bag.My question is it more dangerous to wear a back pack (especially a hard pack) if your in an accident, seeing as there is something on your back.

A little of topic. Does any one have an axio pack? What do you think of it? If anyone has a axio tank bag, do you know if a laptop can fit in there?

I know a lot of people, including myself from time to time, wear a backpack on the bike. It is unsafe for one main reason - if it gets caught on something if you fell off, it could break or rip off your arm, or tear up your shoulder. It is like most things a calculated risk.

I don't know about these hardbags, but I've seen them advertised in the bike magazines.

yep ther eis an associated risk, even the little things, like landing on your back, with something hard in your backpack will most likely cause problems with your spine. (To what degree though I can not comment)

At the end of the day, its where you personally draw the line between risk and reward.

I hate wearing a backpack and always strap it on to the back of the seat. If you have hooks then I think that's the best way, or get mounted bags.

Besides the possible risk, I find wearing a backpack on the bike uncomfortable. I have a Roadgear Multitasker Sport pack, and most of the time I bungee it to the bike............ except if I have a laptop in it. Then it goes on my back. I've heard too many stories about vibration and hard drive failure to put my laptop directly in contact with the frame of the bike. YMMV.

I agree with jstark47...riding with a backpack with any weight in it at all is uncomfortable for me. I got a tail bag that works great. And FYI, I carry a laptop in it to and from work every day and haven't had a problem with the vibration. But YMMV.

I dropped the bike once with a camera around my neck. It hit first and then me. Took out 2 ribs. Not fun at all. Reasonable nekkidness is the way to go.

I think it seems terribly unsafe, not to mention uncomfortable!

I carry a tiny purse when I ride, with a long strap. Its about the size of 2 decks of cards...it can hold my smokes, and a chapstick lol. Its a pain! But it works till I buy a roll bag for my bike :D. I guess you are a guy...and cant get away with that lol.

My boyfriend uses a tankbag and LOVES it. It has very strong magnets, and holds a ton of stuff! They run about 80$, his has lasted for years.

I'm thinking a typical tail bag might be bigger and more "cushiony" than my backpack -- puts more material and padding between the computer and the bike. Tail bag is probably the way to go for bikes without hard cases.

99% of modern computers are going to park the moving bits once you shut it down. Yeah strapping it directly the frame wouldnt be so good. But a laptop in a bag with even halfway decent cushioning should be fine.

I wouldnt ride around with one in standby though. powered up could be bad bad bad. :D
