1998 R1 2nd and 3rd Gear issues

#1 Unread post by dkarl »

I just bought a 1998 r1. This is my first bike so I am not very familiar with the problems. I know the bike was ran hard. But 2nd gear kind of slips when I get on it and Last night it just started giving me problems trying to go into 3rd gear.
Anyone have any helpful hints or advise?
Thanks for the feedback.

My 2nd and 3rd gear slipped back one gear if I accelerated hard. I just put in new oil, and voila it worked fine for me.

Check your clutch.
I would be the old, slow guy. Just let me know where you are going and I'll try to get there before you leave.

Gears don't slip. Especially 'kinda' slip. They engage or they don't. There is no halfway. Well, halfway is when you hear very loud metal to metal grinding. They can pop out of engagement though. They rarely pop back in by themselves.

If something is actually slipping, it will be the clutch.
No Witnesses.... :shifty:
