any ideas??

When I start my bike cold, it idles extremely low, to the point where I have to keep the throttle open or it will stall out. This is regardless of what position the choke is in and no matter how much gas I give it, it will not rev up past 1000rpms. After playing around a bit, I figured that if I start it, close the choke and hold the throttle wide open for about 10 seconds, it'll start to rev up, backfire and then everything runs fine until the next time I cold start.
If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them. It's an 1983 Yamaha XS400 Maxim. All stock.

Fubared carb linkage is the first thing that came to mind.

Clear as mud, thanks.
As for the actual problem, sounds like clogged jets in the carbs, and possibly a dirty airfilter. I'd clean the former, and replace the latter.
Adjust the idle speed, then sync the carbs. Or get a mechanic to do it

Thanks for the tips, I already replaced the air filter so looks like the next step will be cleaning the jets.

Okay, it's definately the carb. I gave it a few shots of carb cleaner and the problem disapeared. Hopefully that'll take care of the problem until next weekend when I can get some help taking the carb off and cleaning it. I never cleaned one before so I wanna make sure I have someone here that knows what they're doing.
Thanks again for the tips.
