First, check to make sure that your brake light switches (both back brake and front brake) are properly adjusted and clean.

What Gadjet said. The most common cause of your problem is either a dirty switch, or poorly adjusted switch.
I'm curious to know what an XS800 is. I've ridden XS750s and 850s (inline triple), but didn't know there was an 800.

I would guess that there is one in the handbrake, and one near the footbrake.
brake lite

It may be dirty brake fluid if your bike has hydro-activated switch (these may be anywhere in the brake line), a common problem with Juice brakes that came out in 58 on el and fl This is especially true if someone has added a lower quality fluid. IE dot 3 or 4 in a dot 5 system Also look for contaminates esp. water. Many states have a must work if present clause about front brakes/lites. If its removed its not there and legal. Ck your state laws and this is for front only.
