Ok so i just signed up for the MSF a week ago and read all the stuff about bringing your gear ect. I can not remember if you had to bring your own helmet? I was almost positive they had some that you could barrow but i went back to look and i am not able to find it. could some one varify this for me? thanks

Depends on the particular school.

Mine had a couple of old nasty loaner helmets available, but you were strongly encouraged to bring your own. Most people did.

I'd call them and ask. They probably won't bite. :D

IF your'e 100% sure that you're going to take up riding, then I second the advice of buying your own before MSF. Do some research here and other places before getting a helmet.

IF you're not 100% sure that you're committed to being a rider, then you might want to wait and use one of theirs. Not everybody takes up riding after MSF - though most do.

Wearing a helmet 100 other people have used, is right up there with bowling shoes ;)!

I would bring my own.

I"m with you on this one - a bandana or do-rag is a good idea.

Very interesting thread!

My wife and I are taking the course (CMSP here in CA) this weekend and we don't have helmets yet. So I called them up and asked about it. The person I spoke to said that I could either bring my own or use theirs. From the way she said it I gathered that most folks did not have their own helmets and used the ones provided by the school.

Still, we may go helmet shopping tonight.

One other interesting point I learned from calling the school. She made it clear that if I had my own helmet, I could only use it if it is "unmodified". Seems to me like a helmet would be the last piece of equipment one would want to modify, but to each her/his own.

my msf provided helmets and required boots, gloves, jacket....

they let you wear gardening gloves, work boots and windbreakers!!
i kind of rushed to get my gear for the class and in hindsight it wasnt a great idea because i bascially bought the first few things i found that fit (gloves and jacket).

i also bought my own helmet kind of rushed too.

the moral of the story is........ they are very leniant with equipment required.
