So I'm in the process of buying a bike and getting my license. I know you have to take the exam (or certified class) and then a driving course. My question is how do you take the driving course when legally you cant ride the bike on the road without a license in TN?

Once you obtain your MC permit, can't you ride with a licensed rider?

1 - you can ride the bike with just the permit with some restrictions
2 - the MSF course is on private property, not the road.

Where I'm at, you pay $5 for a permit, no test required but you must have a valid drivers license, and you are free to drive with these restrictions.
1. No passengers
2. You're required to stay within 30 kms from your home.
3. You are only permitted to ride during daylight hours.
Cops can revoke your permit for breaking any of these rules, but generally speaking, they will issue you a warning if your over the 30 kms and driving at night they will only issue a warning. If they catch you with a passenger they will definately revoke your permit.
If you have a beginners permit for a car, you are also allowed to drive a motorcycle as long as someone with a valid motorcycle license is following you.
Scooters under 50cc are not required to have a motorcycle license here, but getting insurance without it is impossible.

I think the main purpose of the license is to allow passengers. In Kentucky, you can have your permit indefinitely as long as you renew it each year. Really no need for a license unless you have a passenger.
