Which type of bike should I get?

I'm under 18 and I've been riding dirtbikes and ATVs a little bit. So it's no surprise that I want to get a motorbike as my first vehicle.

Which one should I start out with? Something under $4,000 and reliable.
Brands can be useful :)

Cruiser
Scooter
Moped
Touring
Sport

Alrighty... First of all, most of us here will recommend a car as a first road-worthy vehicle. Mostly because that way you have a steel cage around you as you learn the rules of the road that the DMV doesn't tell you about

Second, if you do end up on a bike as a first vehicle, be extra cautious, cagers will try to kill you, knowingly or not, and weather can suck.

Thirdly, THE FUN PART. If you do decide on a bike...
Cruiser
Depending on your size, something smaller than 800 ccs and under 550 lbs. I'm 6'2" and 300 lbs and my Volusia was 805 ccs and 550 lbs, and I was able to hold it up just fine and all...
Some you may want to look into
-Suzuki S50, C50, M50
-Honda Shadow 600 or 750
-Yamaha Virago 500, 600, 750

Scooter
If you feel like it, any size will do...

Moped
Read above...

Touring
Most touring bikes are heavy and have a lot of power, too much for beginners to handle... If I'm wrong here, someone please chime in...

Sport
Anything other than a supersport...
Most people here recommend at most a 500cc sportbike such as the...
-Suzuki GS500
-Kawasaki Ninja 250, 500, POSSIBLY 650

Hope this helps!
Oh, and find Dragonhawk's sig, he's set up a website with TONS of super-helpful materials on it for newbs...

Thanks for the tips!

I think I will be getting a cheap Honda as my first car.

I've been looking around and these bikes look great!

Honda Reflex Sport
Engine Type 249cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke
Wheelbase 60.8 inches
Seat Height 28.3 inches
Dry Weight 373 pounds
Fuel Capacity 3.2 gallons

OR

Piaggio Fly150
Max Speed: 61mph
PRICE: $3400
Fuel Tank: 1.9 gallons

There's also the Piaggio 50cc version, but it looks useless if I'm going around town.

I'm a smaller rider and I started out on a Kawasaki Eliminator 125. I got my "feet" wet, so to speak on riding and now I'm moving up to the 250 cc class cruisers.

I'm looking at a Yamaha Virago 250 now, whick I think at this point in my riding, will be perfect for me.

Other bikes for you to consider:

Honda Rebel 250
Suzuki GZ250

:welcome4:

Go to some dealerships and sit on bikes. Get an idea of what feels right.
Definitely look into a safety course and be sure to check out the "sticky" topics in the New Riders section.

If you get a 150 you will be fine as far as getting around town, just make sure not to go lower.(I have a 150)
