Bike rallies draw myriad musical acts
Country newcomer among performers
By Kristi Singer For The Sun News
The Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association Myrtle Beach Rally runs through May 22 with plenty of concerts tailored to the biker crowd.
Sounds include aggressive heavy metal act Mudvayne, outlaw country Waylon Jennings' son Shooter, and classic rock bands Styx and .38 Special.
Classic, Southern and country rock sounds, as well as heavier metal, have been tied to biker rallies for years. At the infamous Sturgis Rally in South Dakota, the "Motorcycle Mecca," performers have included Sheryl Crow, Def Leppard, Styx, Doobie Brothers, Joan Jett, REO Speedwagon, Slaughter, Tim McGraw and many others.
"Some of it's lifestyle - the way the musicians dress on stage [and] some of them probably ride bikes as well," Gary Bongiovanni, founder and editor-in-chief of Pollstar since 1981, said of bikers' music preferences. "There's classic '70s rock acts like .38 Special, The Doobie Brothers, Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Then you throw a Travis Tritt in there. It's actually pretty diverse. It tends to be beer drinkin' music. It's rock 'n' roll music - they're obviously not looking for soft music. The biker crowd will tend to be older, they're not going to be 18-year-olds. .38 Special, acts that play Southern-tinged rock, fit really well with that - as well as the more 'outlaw' elements of country music. They're not looking for balladeers."
One act bikers probably won't mind cracking a cold one to is country newcomer Shelly Fairchild, scheduled to perform Wednesday supporting Styx at the House of Blues and Thursday supporting David Allan Coe, also at the House of Blues.
Fairchild released her Sony debut, "Ride," this year, a title inspired by her love of riding horses and motorcycles.
"I got my motorcycle license a year ago in January," Fairchild said during a recent phone interview from Nashville, Tenn. "I love being outdoors. I love that I just got my motorcycle license. I had just gotten into the whole motorcycle, Harley-Davidson thing. They're actually sponsoring me. They give me clothes to wear, and in turn, I do some of their biker rallies. They've been really supportive."
If country isn't your thing, check out these other shows:
Today, regrouped original members of The Outlaws perform at the House of Blues.
Saturday, Blackfoot and Jackyl perform at the House of Blues.
Sunday, .38 Special and Truck Stop Preachers perform at the House of Blues.

May 29, Charlie Daniels performs at H.B. Spokes Saloon.
