Hi!

I lucked out and got ahold of a 1982 Honda GL500 for $500. Just had to replace a gasket and change fluids and I'm almost ready to go.

I removed the big ol' ferring and now I'm trying to find some front blinkers, reflective mirrors and a set of brackets for the headlight that I salvaged from the ferring; problem is that I don't know what parts are compatible with the bike I have!

I've poked through the JC whitney online catalog and several online retailers but I can't seem to lock down which parts will fit my bike specifically. Are a lot of the brackets and blinkers universal?

I've been riding dirt bikes for about 7 years and this is my first step into street bikes , I'm down to about $100 and trying to get all this situated without buying the wrong parts, ha. I'm really excited to get this bike out on the road

Anybody have any words of wisdom or advice for finding brackets, blinkers and mirrors for a 1982 GL500 silverwing?

As for brackets and lights:

1. measure where you want to put brackets.

2. buy appropriate size bracket


The rest is wiring.

Look for used parts from a CX500. Same bike that came without the fairing. Everything you need will be there.

Just a note on the wing mirrors, I'm not sure what you bike has exactly, but you do have to be careful. Most mirrors are 1 size thread, but there are exceptions, also some bikes have an opposite direction thread on one side, to the other (so the wind doesn't unscrew them).

Best bet is to take your old pair of mirrors to an auto jumble, and find some you like that appears to match the thread on your existing ones

The great thing about having a huge selection is that, well, you've got a huge selection aimed at customizing...so you're bound to find a style of parts you prefer, then its all a matter of bolting things on. Things often bolt to the fork tubes or the clamps.

Blinkers are easy, as they just wire a positive and a ground. So, when you have a set mounted up where you need them, then run your wiring. Again, the biggest thing is mounting them. "What kind of bracket can I use?" is the big question. Then be sure they fit any inspection or road laws as far as colors go and you're set.
