So I've been driving an old 400cc yamaha for a few months now and have been thinking of upgrading. Today I stopped in at one of the local dealers and found an 87 harley sportster 1100 for $5000. It has 50,000 kms on it and is in almost mint condition.

Does this seem like a reasonable price? Also, does anyone know how reliable these are?

I think that's a bit high for an 87 Harley.

I assume that's Canadian?

You can get a great condition Sportster 10 years newer for just a little bit more in the US. Sportsters older than 2004 are also known for having a ton of vibration. H-D motors aren't exactly smooth and those engines were rigidly mounted.

Take this with a large grain of salt, it comes from what I have heard not from experience. These bikes vibrate rather badly, the newer models have had rubber mounts added so that the engine doesn't transmit vibration to the frame as much as the older models. A friend who has a 2006 1200 said it is worlds apart from the older one he rode.

Goto Harleys website and check the msrp on a new 07 model. Harley no longer has a waiting list for most bikes so the high priced used ones are few and far between, you can get a new 1200 for less than $9000.00 usd and an 883 for around $6000.00usd and an 883 is plenty for a new rider!
just my 2 cents.

Too bad you are all the way up in Prince Edward Island though, cause I would like to get my hands on one of those old 1100, Make a nice toy out of it...after some serious negotiating (3g is about right for that bike)
